This is a fantastic application for teaching subjects which touch on demographics. This app allows you to search through the statistics collected via facebook (which has more than 600 million active users as at January 2011) and cross-tabulate various demographic characteristics. For example, you may complete the following hypothetical search:
Australian > Age: 18-24 > Sex: Males > Likes & Interests: Football
With over 600 million users on facebook, this application provides an enormous survey sample to collect very reliable statistics for use in the classroom. One way to utilise this tool in Business Studies whilst teaching Marketing, may be through doing the following:
1. Students are to be sorted into small marketing teams of 3-4 and each be allocated a different brand from the same product category, e.g. Sneaker market: Nike, Adidas, Puma etc.
2. Students are to conduct their research using this app in order to determine their chosen target market for their assigned product.
3. Students are to complete the marketing mix (Product - assigned, Place, Promotion and Price) for their product and present their mix to the class.
4. Classmates and teacher debate which marketing mix would be most likely to succeed.
